Vaccine products include some of the oldest biological pharmaceutical entities. They are also an area where new techniques and manufacturing technologies are giving rise to significant growth. There exists a wide variety of “vaccines,” and the purification targets vary from conjugate products to plasmid DNA, viruses, virus-like particles and recombinants. Pall offers chromatography products for all types of processes, from membrane ion exchange chromatography, to IEX and mixed-mode sorbents.
Mustang® Membrane Chromatography: A lead product for new vaccine development

Pall Mustang Q anion exchange membrane utilizes a microporous membrane with active Q chemistries linked directly to the membrane surface. By using three-dimensional structures with open (0.8 µm) pores, active chemistry groups are immediately available for binding. The membrane’s 8000Å convective pores are ideal for purifying large molecular weight targets such as plasmid DNA; and, dynamic binding capacity of up to 20 mg DNA/mL of membrane has been observed. As a result, where traditional process chromatography can require time-consuming experiments to determine optimal flow rates to maximize dynamic binding capacities, chromatography membranes operate at much higher volumetric throughputs (up to 40 bed volume/min) and with greater binding capacity as molecular weight increases.

HEA/PPA HyperCel™ Sorbents

Offer unique selectivities not seen with traditional IEX or HIC chromatography sorbents. HEA HyperCel and PPA HyperCel sorbents should be evaluated when:

  • Traditional HIC is being evaluated. HEA and PPA will behave like HIC sorbents without the need to add lyotrophic salt.
  • The conductivity of the feedstock is too high for a traditional IEX sorbent. This will reduce the need for dilution before loading.
  • New selectivities will help resolve/remove closely-related impurities.
